Redesigning Waste Management for the Urban Poor

Upcycling urban waste to improve livelihoods

In urban Tanzania, waste management is a long-standing challenge. The Recycler, a social enterprise based in Dar es Salaam, is out to change all that by offering professional waste management and recycling solutions for a variety of waste streams. In winning the fourth Amplify challenge, the Recycler will target a new demographic and bring their services to urban poor communities who often suffer the most from lingering waste management problems.

By providing families with the supplies they need to cultivate black soldier fly maggots in their own yards, the Recycler team believes they can reduce—if not eliminate—household organic waste. After doing their job consuming refuse, the maggots can also be used as natural food for chickens and other livestock, reducing families’ dependence on expensive animal feed.
